Kiev-Pechersk Lavra – is not only the main shrine of Ukraine but also one of the largest monasteries in the world.
As in past centuries, today the monastery is a kind of “city within a city.” The monastery has a printing press, a bakery, a candle factory, a pilgrimage center, sewing, icon painting, and carpentry workshop, beehives, orchards, farm, cafes and hotels. Also here is the residence of the head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and its administrative apparatus, theological seminaries and academies.
On the territory of National Kyiv-Pechersk Reserve, located on the upper Lavra, there are several ancient temples, the former monastic buildings, which now presents museum exhibits.
The Lavra has about two dozen churches, and its total area, by the way, not much less than the kingdom of Monaco.
This picture was taken from the belfry of the church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which is located at the southern wall of the monastery.
